I would go with the curve ball, parts will be half the price even from a Honda dealer, and at that age you will get more niggly little problems with the BMW's that will cost an arm and a leg to fix.
One word 'Balls'Parts for Hondas are just as pricey (if not more) and your more tied on availability (less specialist breakers and Europarts, GSF etc)
Worked for both, and I'd take the BMW everytime from this prospective
^^ What he said
My 10 year old E46 330i Touring has done 150k now. No more "niggly problems" now than when it was younger. A seized caliper replaced by my indie recently (part cost £80ish from GSF). I needed new discs and pads fitting anyway due to pure wear (found a guy on eBay selling Mintex disc/pad sets for around £90 per axle). Running an older Beemer needn't be as ruinous as some would have you believe.
I can't comment on Honda spares prices or the vehicle as a whole but I've been in a well looked after 51 plate E39 with 100k on the clock and it's still a very nice place to be.
