Oil pressure light
Discussion
Does anyone know at what oil pressure the low oil pressure warning light comes on? (ZZR 1100/1200 engine)
I think my oil pressure gauge sender is playing up as it reads really low at idle but the low pressure light doesn't come on. The light does come on before starting the engine and goes out when the engine runs so I think that is OK, it is just that I don't believe the gauge readings.
Thanks
Martin

Some OP idiot type warning lights come on at negligible or even zero pressure.
What pressure is it reading at idle (and @ what revs if you know)?
What matters most of all is what pressure you've got at 4000rpm hot; if at that you're seeing 50 plus, even better 60, there's likely nothing at all to worry about. Often the problem of a very low reading at hot idle is because the tickover is set to a heavy flywheel car like idle speed i.e. too low for a negligible flywheel bike motor; as a rule of thumb, I'd say plus about 50% for what you might set the idle speed of the motor in your road car.

ZZR1200 manual states that the oil pressure should be between 28 and 43 psi at 4000 rpm when hot (90 degrees C).
I really believe it is a sensor fault as when the gauge reads 2 psi (900 - 1000 rpm idle) the low pressure light doesn't come on!It isn't too bad when the revs are up a bit, but still seems a bit low.
I just wondered if anyone knew at what pressure the warning light should come on.

Does that mean you don't bother with a steering wheel either because you are going to crash anyway??
I think an oil pressure gauge is vital on a race engine, it can give an early idication that something is wrong (provided you look at it of course) and can give you a chance to have something to rebuild intead of a catastrophic blow up where nothing is salvageable.

thats right. I was being serious.I think an oil pressure gauge is vital on a race engine, it can give an early idication that something is wrong (provided you look at it of course) and can give you a chance to have something to rebuild intead of a catastrophic blow up where nothing is salvageable.
Here's what I have found out today!
The oil pressure sender which was on my car was an AST one (didn't know that before I ordered one), I fitted a VDO version and the oil pressure now reads backwards, 122 psi when ignition is turned on, 92 psi at idle and 70 odd when I raise the revs a bit.
Oil pressure switch is 0.1 bar
I had better get a new AST pressure sender now!
