Try roulette for a bit. Pick black or red. It's a coin flip that's biased against you by 1-2% so you might get lucky. If you get lucky, walk away, if you don't, walk away. If you can't play poker there (the only game that there's a vague chance of doing well over time), then expect to lose and you might be surprised.

Assume you're going to lose every penny you change into chips, think of it as an expense of a good night out & just try to enjoy yourself. Anything you walk away with will be a bonus & you'll have gained some experience for any future visits

Have a limit and stick to it. I tend to take out my budget for the night out - beer, kebab, the lot, and shove twenty in my back pocket for a taxi. It's good to have a limit to your winnings too. When you start winning, it is easy to start upping the stakes as it's no longer your money you are gambling - until you realise you have pissed it away and you are desperate to win it back. It is also useful to agree with your most sensible mate how much you are willing to lose so they can have a word if you get out of control.

Yeah no worries on the limits. I am the des driver tonight and only taking cash.
This 'backing players' on blackjack. How would I go about this? Do I just ask the dealer if I can back them?
You just put your bet down behind theirs. If you're not sure, just ask the croupier. This 'backing players' on blackjack. How would I go about this? Do I just ask the dealer if I can back them?

Well the 50p minimum bet roulette tables were full so I went to the £5 min black jack. Came out with a small profit so I cannot complain.
The croupier made the experience very pleasant as he knew we were new to the game!
I've only been once when I was on a cruise in January, I got £100 changed to see how long I could make it last & got some good experience. I was playing for £10 a game & was down to £30 at 1 point, if I'd have lost the next hand I was going to stick the last £20 down & then walk away if I lost but I clawed it back. I got back up to around £80 & was starting to feel a bit tired/pissed so gave myself £50 lower & £100 upper limits but just as I reached £100 the dealer changed so I stuck around for a bit & walked away with £70The croupier made the experience very pleasant as he knew we were new to the game!

Personally I'd use your first time to simply observe. The pace is frantic and easily confusing if you are not a seasoned casion player, and make no mistake, years of playing online and with mates doesn't make it much easier. It's a whole different ball game.
Sit, observe, learn. The etiquette, the games, how people conduct themselves, reactions. Only when you are confident with how it all works should you change cash for chips and sit yourself at a table.
Trust me, a newbie dropping a clanger or causing problems for other players goes down like a lead balloon. Serious gamblers, especially ones who have been drinking, aren't famed for their patience.
