O.k, I did what Quinny advised and took the sump off and everything looks fine, and the bottom end was dripping in oil. So I took the oil pump off again and I have stripped it down.
One thing to note - when I filled the engine with oil and ran the pump off a drill and emptied the oil again when I took the oil filter off it was almost empty. So the pump is not taking any oil from the sump.
So could it be the pump or a blockage between the sump and pump.
If it is a blockage is there an easy way to clear it?

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted!

You did prime the pump first by packing it with vasaline didnt you...

if the pumps empty it will not self prime..

apologies if you already know that

The first time I drained the oil I only took the pressure relief valve out and not the entire base plate, so I presumed I would not need to pack the pump.

Maybe I was wrong!

if the pump is drained of oil it, doesnt work at all unless its first primed...

if you drain the oil and take the filter off together even then the pump will probably need priming....
