My Mrs has received a parking ticket from an outfit called CP Plus for £50 for overstaying a stop at Knutsford services last month. She reckons if there were signs about permitted parking times she didn't see them! The ticket doesn't look particularly professional or official, so can it be ignored or does a long period of harassment and threats of court action begin if we ignore it?

Ignore it.

This is a matter of contract between your missus and them.

If they can't name the driver, they have no-one to sue for breach of contract. And they don't know who was driving, do they?

They will continue to correspond with you, in terms that suggest this is a parking fine, but it is not.

Assuming, of course, that a local authority does not control the car park.

Write to them, telling them to direct their demand for payment to the driver of the car, whose identity you don't know. Ignore any suggestion that the registered keeper is responsible.

Don't write to them at all! Otherwsie they will pester you. Lots of really good advice on the specialist parking forums at www.pepipoo.com

If its not a council owned car park ignore all correspondance. If its a council ticket pay up.

Yes, it does - but threats is all you will get. They will NEVER be able to make you pay as they cannot prove the identity of the driver or that they entered into a contract to park.

It's a moto car park not council run. As everyone else states. pretty unenforceable.

2 things. how the heck do you pass so much time in a service area. Ok i know it.s got small M&S ?
For everyones benefit run the other half past specsavers as the parking eye signs are prominently displayed all over especially as you enter smile

the signs are to deter those who meet up and leave one car behind on a day out.

yep, dozens of huge signs all over the site including on way in off motorway

unlike some of the questionable practices by some car parks I'd say she's morally responsible for this charge as she took their space. Up to her if she wants to do the morally right thing or not.

Of course I 100% retract that if she was there <2 hours.

If she was there using their services at any stage (during her alledged contravention of the rules) then they shouldn't be money grabbing barstewards. Morally speaking of course. wink

OP, just ignore the letter.

Cheers guys, letter will be duly ignored! Mrs spent too much time there as used it as a halfway meeting point with a Scottish chum, and being girlies gassing away, lost track of time.

Does make you wonder though if these restrictions conflict with the advice not to drive tired and take a rest from time to time. Nod off in your car at the peril of possibly getting a ticket if you zzzzz for too long!

right, morally speaking I'll remember that next time I go to a concert, airport, theme park etc as it's my moral right to use their land and fk off wthout paying as I'm using other services there

their signs very clearly state that if you use their land for more than an amount of time they expect you to pay - to drive off without doing so and then effectively say screw you, in my view is wrong.

Yep, completely agree with the above poster. You have overstayed in a free car park so are morally obliged to cover their loss. Erm £0.00 ought to cover it

Yes. Loss on a free car park is zero, their choice to create admin cost's in writing to you.

Just ignore them and do not enter into any communication with them.

HAhaha - as it's the only available parking area and its FREE.... to then say you can only use their facilities for a set time. And then to top it off claim that they've lost revenue from the FREE parking space because you were inside spending money in their establishment...

So if I stop for a piss and bugger off it is okay, but if the OP's missus sits about paying for overpriced coffee she should pay 50 quid for the privilege?

Just Google them when you have a few minutes to spare, and have a good laugh at their expense!

The signs are easily missed if it is busy, and you are looking for a space, or if you follow somebody in who is lost and keeps standing on the brake, or indicates left then goes right - Forton services tonight for instance!

It used to be that colleagues would meet at MSAs to car share on business travel, leaving one car behind all day (or longer) and hence saving fuel costs. I suspect parking charges are the means for the MSAs to take some revenue from this.

Wifey is beginning to lose her nerve and wants to pay up i.e she wants me to pay up despite me showing her all the threads on the web about these little scamsters! On the 4th letter now, legal action pending, and charge is up to £140. None of the letters has been sent recorded delivery so how can they prove we have received them, let alone who was driving? rofl
