My sister suggested that, for my nephew's 3rd birthday, he would like a model aeroplane to hang from his bedroom ceiling. She's probably expecting a ready made plane however I thought it would be a good idea if I build the plane myself!

I haven't made a model plane in about 30 years so I'm looking for something not overly complicated. With regards the model itself I was thinking something from the '30's (the plane at the beginning of Temple of Doom kind of thing)

Any hints and tips greatly appreciated! smile

The kid's 3 so what about something like this? At least he can take it down and zoom it around a bit. Anything you construct will be treated with kid gloves and dare I say, of little interest to him.

He is only 3 but I dont actually envisage him playing with it (he pretty much destroys everything he lays his hands on...!) but it more being something decorative for his bedroom. Hopefully, when he's older he will appreciate the effort made by his uncle.

I'd say build one for your own enjoyment and also get something he can throw around and play with himself if you can find it a toy version of the plane you built.

Ah, c'mon, there's only one answer to this, and you get to build it.

Here you go:

You screw a pivot to the cieling and the plane flies around on a wire in a circle under its own power. I've, err, that is my 2.5 year old son's got a Mustang, and it's strong enough that he can play with it without braking it.

I've put most of my recent scale model aircraft on string in his bedroom cieling, but he's too young to apprecitate them. At least with something that looks and 'flies' like a real aircraft he has something to watch rather than look at.
