I am looking at Canon digital SLRs and wonder if I am better spending £150 on a 10d, I may be pushing it for a 20d or a 300?

I would hold out for the 20D. I borrowed a mate's last week and in terms of pure image quality I rate it higher than my 40D. The tiny screen and slightly outdated menu system is a minor blot on its landscape.

10D is realy realy old... And will be noticably slower in use and operation than a 20D but it will still take a decent pix.

Only issue I have with a 10D tho is it is not an EF-S mount so you cant use any canon EF-S lenses (whithout risky modifications).

Hmm, i'd take £150 for my 300D + 18-55mm canon lens. Got 2 battery chargers and at least 2 batteries.

I like the idea of a better build with a 10 or 20d.
I want it for a few days out and also product shots with a light tent.

I've owned both 10D and the 20D. In terms of image quality I can see no difference in the prints or on the computer screen. The 10D was slower to wake up when you pushed the shutter button. The 20D noticeably quicker. If anything the colours on my 10D screen were better than the 20D if you are worried about such things. Both great cameras but if I had a choice between the two I would get the 20D because of the EF-S mount question. The 20D still holds its own against current crop frame cameras.

I've just upgraded my 10d to a 20d mainly because I found the 10d a bit slow for motorsport photography, yet to use the 20d much but just messing around at home I'm happy with the results.

these people do 20d's from £189 so might be worth a look http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/used-equipment/us...
