After my decision to go for a Lambo, not a F430, GT3, etc etc I have just spoken to a mate of mine with an 08 Gallardo, he said the early ones had issues. What do I need to be looking to avoid, cant afford a later one

I looked into them before I bought my 04 gallardo and apart from the usual clutch debate didn't find anything to worry about. I have now owned it for a year and having spoken at length to the main dealer it seems there are very few issues with the early ones and even less with the newer ones. My rear spoiler stopped working properley which the main dealer advised is a common problem and cost £1500 to replace under warranty and make sure the clutch has been replaced with the later type.

Otherwise I wouldn't worry and just buy one and enjoy.

PS I went for the manual which I prefer but I also think they don't get ragged as much as the play station egears....

hi, i had an 04' last year. Clutches are the main issues to watch out for - be prepared to spend 4.5K to change it when it goes.
Make sure the air con is working properly and electric seats are in order as well - the latter will cost a shed load to fix (2.5K+ per seat)

Friend had an early one and it did seem that there were things just waiting to go wrong. Just small things but not to be expected from a £120k car or maybe it is when owning supercars.smile

1. Fuel cap lid came off its thread.
2. Door handle came off in his hand
3. Grinding and Knocking noises especailly when turning corners at slow speed
4. Kangarooing(heard this is due to low on fuel?)
5. Oil light came on allot
6. Chap that bought the car off him changed the cluctch with 3 weeks.

Bare in mind this car was bought from a Lambo dealer with low miles so it should have been faultless. Great cars but i wouldnt risk buying an early one if i was on a budget.

Don't wish to scaremonger , but I had a very very clean low mileage 04 car back in 07 - which engine expired < 100 miles later .

It was just in warranty and as such the engine was replaced with a later 06 improved model . Lucky it was in warranty otherwise I would have been looking at a £25k invoice .

Points 1-5 not happened to me. Point 6 - new owner trying to do fast starts?

04 Gallardo bought privately, owned two & half years now, original clutch (13K), no major faults, broken ABS lead on Right front, spoiler stopped working - took it off and greased it - fine now, new front brakes fitted Jan 08 due to low mileage, they don't like sitting doing nothing.

I was on a budget and can't afford a car that costs a fortune to run. Gallardo suits me fine.

04 car had it for 9 months

power steering pump sacrificial shaft broke twice
clonking suspension drove me mad
2 clutches
2 rear lights that melted
rattling dash
pretty poor build quality as well- trim bits falling off

I would not buy an 04/05 car!

I have had my 05 car now for 6 months and done about 5000 miles, apart from the clutch which I knew would need changing when I bought the car, an o2 sensor, and a bit of corrosion that was fixed under warranty, touch wood it has been the most reliable car I have had. I guess it depends on how the previous owner has treated it.

What was the cause of the engine failure?

I was speaking to Lambo HighWycombe today and there was a murci engine for sale as a coffee table.
Apparently thats the only murci engine fail they have seen in 8 yrs - and it was because the guy had let it run out of oil.
Imagine breaking down and the mechanic calling you later to say the engine is dead - new engine cost him £38K ...and he was not under warranty. Ouch....

What CB is saying, is that the engine failed due to insufficient oil in the sump .... hence it went pop or seized ..lot of people don't bother to check engine oil as frequent as they should ....

Is £4.5K really the going rate for a clutch...........seems v. expensive?

Apologies - i'm not technical at all , but I recall one of the pistons/conrods let go and took the cylinder head with it. Sufficient enough for them not to fix and they sent over a technical detail from the factory to inspect .

By no means am I saying my car is indicative of all early cars , but I wouldn't be comfortable with an out of manufacturers warranty gallardo based on my experiences .

about 4k for a sintered clutch from a main dealer.
