Sorry, its Ted stripping out slashes thingy.

Do you get a window with loads of files in it that says c:|windows|system (where the pipes are replaced by slashes) in the top left hand corner of the window?

Right, nothing to worry about firstly but a pain I grant you.

It happens for a particular reason with ME, give me a bit and I will be back with an answer...

There are cases where this is caused by Norton products. Do you use the Norton security suite?

If so try

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/edb3cbe1e1afbf6d852569d20071322a/8070dd0e7f3abc5d882569fc0069e2d0

Or this (not sure if this is only win98)
"Finally Windows Explorer can pop up when booting if you have both a
C:Programs folder as well as a C:Program Files folder"

Stripped from google

It always strips out \'s you need two of them like this \\ to make it read correctly.

Right just had a look.

Download Ad Aware from www.lavasoft.de and run it on your machine.

Then reboot.

If its still happening then I am a bit stuck I think as you dont have Norton. You should ensure that the Windows\System folder is shut down before you shut down the computer.
