I remember seeing a film a few years ago. No idea when it was made (70s, 80s or 90s is about as accurate as I can guess).

The story was of some kind of world-wide extinction event (nuclear explosion perhaps), where the only people who survived were those who had actually died in the same instant as the event.

Any ideas folks? It's been driving me mad !

that does sound familiar, just hoping it's not Red Dwarf i'm thinking of

Sounds like Day of the Triffids although they don't die, they just go blind and the Triffids get them.

Originally a book but there were a few tv series/tv films made IIRC

Story sounds similar, though not exactly the same. I think there were a lot more than 3 survivors. Perhaps there were several version of this film. May even have been one of those cheapo 'made for tv' films.
