The ariel used to go up and down fine, the motor was running ok, switch radio off, ariel goes down, switch it on, ariel goes up.

Switch it off, silence, no movement. balls.

What could the problem be? does it plug in to the back of the head unit - might it just have worked itself loose? Or another problem altogether?

Tempted to buy another head unit in anycase as its a bit rubbish, cd's skip at every opportunity, new speakers too (why not!)

Any advice appreciated!

It could be anything, from the head unit, to a faulty connection, to a broken aerial motor. I guess you could do a continuity test from where the head unit plugs in, to where the aerial plugs in. At least you'd know that the basic wiring is ok.

It does plug into the back of the head unit. There's 2 connections in the back of the unit, one for the aerial and a white 32pin thing for all the other wires.

Last time I was messing around with mine, it seemed the aerial connection controlled the electric aerial, but I might well have got confused. The aerial connection could have worked loose, will the head unit try and tune into any stations? I'd be very surprised if the white connection has worked loose, it was very difficult to remove when I wanted to! It's easy to remove the headunit, you just need some standard head-removing tools, there's a guide here

If the car happens to be a MK1, check the fuses, there are 2 of them in the boot by the motor on the right hand side, i found this to be the problem with mine (not that mine works properly anyway hehe

Cheers guys,

The radio still works fine, picks up all the radio stations no problem (apart from the local one which went bust...)

I'll have a look at the fuses tonight when i get home.

Either way better than changing the ariel!

I may sound daft (not for the first time) but Dad had a Cortina with an electric ariel which stopped working. Cleaning it with WD40 & a rag fixed it.
