On Saturday, I had the utter stupidity of modern Britain confirmed.

Browsing the poundshop at the local shopping centre, looking to see if anything was worth a pound, a woman approached one of the shelf stackers and came out with what could only be described at the single most dumb question I have ever heard in my life.

"How much is this".

This threw me. Utter disbelief. Put simply, I couldn't believe that ANYONE could be this fking dumb, bordering on braindead. Stupidity personified.

It's a fking poundshop. Everything is a pound, except the stuff that is sold as a quantity for a pound. Either way, one single item is no more than a pound. It is about as simple as it gets. Round figures. One pound. Everything is the same price. Hence there is no price tags under or on every item. Because it is a pound. Stuff that is two/three/four for £1 is clearly marked. The shop is called 'PoundShop' There are 6 foot banners all over the shop saying 'Everything is a pound'. How there can be ANY confusion is beyond me...

The poor shelf stacker just took a sharp intake of breath and announced in a thoroughly resigned manner 'a pound'. Stupid shopper looked absolutely baffled like there must have been a mistake and hobbled off towards the till all excited. What they were expecting it to be is beyond me.

'How often do you get asked that' I sniggered to the girl as I passed. 'At least once an hour' she replied, barely able to scrape a smile in the process having evidently grown thoroughly bored of stupid people and been ground down by the same old stupid question.

This just typifies the scale of the problem we have on our hands in this country for me. Grown people, adults, people who should have been through enough education to get them through life, yet can't even use the three brain cells they were endowed with to think before opening their cake hole and wasting oxygen.

Staggering.

Granted, but it is a stupid thing for even a stupid person to come out with. It was said with total seriousness too, without an inkling that it could be that obvious..

I often get asked "why" by the better half to the most staggeringly obvious of questions - for example

"I am just dishing dinner up - how much food would you like" - Answer "Why?" rolleyes

Some people cannot make obvious conclusions based on obvious data I guess.

A pound!? Sounds a bit expensive. We have a 99p shop in Camden, much more reasonable. smile

Good post, lots of anger in there which is good to read

I hate people who come into our office & the 1st thing they say is "Am I in the right place?"

"For fking what? If you want to report a fire/buy a car/book in some brain surgery/search through some brochures for ideas about where to go on holiday then no, you're not. Tell me what you fking want first"

I hate stupid people, I really do

I suppose the issue could have been that the item may have been perceived to be worth more hence the customer's excitement when it was confirmed that indeed it was £1 as the quality was actually ste.

You went to the pound shop and were geniunely surprised that encountered a mouth-breathing dullard?

Do you recoil in amazement at finding sick people in Hospitals?

biglaugh

THat was my thoughts. If a core sample of pound shop shoppers is a good indicator for 'modern Britain' then its time to pack

What were you doing in a pound shop? Other than checking out the shelf stacker girl.

Although someone I knew from Uni used to do this for kicks. Go around asking how much items were in poundshops, then take a sharp intake of breath and tell them it was expensive.

Killing time while wifey was faffing around in the jewellers. Shelf stacker girl wasn't worth checking out either sadly.
