They're all pretty much the same inside to be honest with you, I'd just go for the spec and look that appeals. The Samsungs have been the defacto choice for around a year now, and as you say, the new Vaios are pretty sexy. I'd go with either of those personally - I'd lean towards the Vaio, as I am a dirty Sony we smile

I agree with Bodhi, I think most of them are much the same. Can you get a Vaio for £300 though?

I bought my sister an Asus EEE PC a while back and she loves it.

How about this?

£765?! Are they over twice as good as the Vaio/Asus/ANOther products? Would you get twice as much use, fun, productivity out of a Macbook as you would with the others? Personally I think you'd be paying for the name, looks, 'kudos' of having a Macbook when something for half the price would do the job.

I agree with everything you say there mate but a Macs one of those things that you just desire smile

The Sony Vaio at £300 seems awesome too. Off to John Lewis tonight to have a play around.

Asus seems highly recommended over the net for netbooks too and there are some nice ones on the link you posted.

The Samsung ones seems very good to but surprisingly John Lewis don't sell them.

Slightly o/p, does anyone ever do word processing on these things, such as college work etc?

I am considering buying one instead of a laptop, but not sure if this is a wise move?

The screen has just died on my Acer One which I used for sofa surfing, light emailing, the odd film when traveling, and that's pretty much about it. It filled the gap lovely between flashing up my proper work laptop, or going into the study and using the desktop.

I'm replacing it with an iPad

To be fair, a MacBook Pro is not a direct alternative to a cheap netbook, it's a proper laptop.

My GF bought a Samsung netbook after lots of internet research a few weeks ago. Worked well until she tried to charge it - message said "plugged in not charging".
Was bought via Amazon, so now been posted (at our cost) to a repairer, but it was implied that we will have to pay for a new battery. Of course I have no intention of doing that... but waiting to see first. Customer service gets a big fat zero though.

Yep, its been my only laptop at uni since August last year, its perfectly useable, although I have the Samsung with the larger keyboard (N120, but may have been replaced).

As for other stuff, it handles iPlayer and other video sites fine, can do photo editing as well (obviously processing times for effects/changes will be longer).

Having said that, I take mine to campus every day, but if you think it will stay on the desk most of the time I would go for a 15" full size laptop.

Fair point. I was assuming OP was looking for Netbook-like performance/features so just compared (perhaps wrongly) the Macbook Pro on that basis. smile

You could always get a cheap USB keyboard if you're going to be typing on it for hours, and just leave that at your 'base'.
