Hi all,

A couple of "how much" questions.

We want to get a couple of units built in our lounge to fill the alcoves, usual type of thing - two doors on the front with a couple of shelves inside, and two or three floating shelves on the wall above, in white. What would you reckon I'd be looking at? I've been quoted just over 900 all in (excluding painting), does that seem about right?

Secondly, what do decorators charge for doing a hall and stairs? Most of it is stripped, but would need lining paper and painting, ceiling would need stripping and painting too (our ceilings are all in good nick but have horrid paper on them). I'd do it myself but have a massive thing about heights so don't really fancy it much! Any ideas?

Would help with both if you gave dimensions... you could be in a stately home... or a two bed semi. wink

Sorry, those would help!!

It's a 1930s semi, units would be about 130cm wide by approx 40 deep, height wise I'm not what's typical to be honest but probably between 60 and 70cm.

Stairs and the hallway, well the hall is 15ft long with 6 doors off it, and upstairs there are 5 doors off a landing that's 10ft 3 by 8ft 3 at it's widest.

what wood are they using? i take it you've had more than one quote? work out the cost of materials and take that away [they usually add 20% or so on top] then divide by the no, of days he's said that will take. the daily rate is what i go by as a measure of value for money and also weeds out the dross [i.e. a pikey plasterer once quoted me £40/day labour only, i stopped laughing, told him to F.O and paid a pro]

i'm in east yorkshire and have just had:

> 2 staircases re-ballustred [sp?] with me supplying the newels & bannister, him supplying the spindles. spindles were 1100mm and fixed into the treads [i.e. no string] and he had to reinstate all the detailing on the side of each tread [previously hacked off to subdivide the house].

> supply & fit mock victorian pannelling under the stairs in mdf and construct a 1m x 2m double cabinet to match to house the lekky meter, with 3 opening mdf doors.

no painting but all holes filled & sanded. total cost £440 inc. vat. 1 man, 3 days work [ish, knocked off early each day].

he told me the price would have been 50% more when he was turning away work last year, but is struggling to fill his weeks at the moment.

no idea on painting, but wouldn't mind hearing any quoted prices you get.

Only had one quote so far from a guy I've used in the past and know he does good work, but it seemed a tad high to me. That was in MDF as well, so it's mainly labour. He does a good job but isn't that quick a worker. Next step was further quotes but thought I'd gauge the views on here first!

Try this if you can weild a screwdriver.

jali.co.uk

whack in your measurements and in a few days you get flat pack alcove cupboards in MDF primed ready to erect.

Have yet to use them but had heard good reviews.

im a decorator, and round here(northwales) the going rate is about 100/120quid a day, depending on whether u are haveing woodwork done aswell, that would be the most time consuming seeing as u have lots of doors/frames!!

should be about 3/4 days all in a recon!!
