As their spokesmen said it is a measure to stabilise petrol prices not neccesarily cut them (though the level at which they are stabilised could be below today's level).

It's the rippling effect you get from a dodgy re-spray. You can see it reflected just on the back offside corner of that Red BMW E92 (just to the left of the filling nozzle).

But it won't. Because rising petrol prices are not a result of rising oil prices; they (seem) to be a market-driven fluctuation. So if the government drops duty by 10p, the market will simply replace the discount.

That is not obviously true, do you have anything to support that?

Not at all. Just that darned hunch hehe

Why is it 'obviously' not true that price hedges are not driving the price? (Sincere question - I've already admitted that I'm not coming from a position of specific knowledge)

The price of petrol in the UK seems to follow the price of oil (in sterling terms) quite closely, after tax is taken into account. I dont doubt that the price of oil is determined by the market, but that is nothing to do with the Tory price stabiliser effort. Reducing the petrol pump price in the UK would have little effect on the oil price, which is determined by global actions. The UK just isnt a big enough a consumer to do that.

But that was exactly my point. (Maybe we're agreeing with different words hehe )

This isn't about oil, it's about petrol. So the Tory discount won't affect the oil price, it'll just tinker with the retail price. And if they do that, IMO, the market-makers will simply take up the slack created by the discount. Which means more wasted taxes.

And my point is that there is no evidence of that. Otherwise petrol prices in the UK would not track the oil price so well. There is sufficient competition in the UK market, and its a very mature one, that keeps it that way.
