Non Participating attendees at track days
Discussion
I was wondering if it was ok to come along to trackdays just to watch. I do have a Porker, but am on a (verily!) tight budget and can't afford tyre and brake replacement (excepting scheduled changes) and the insurance excess/cost of possible damage. But I would like to come and watch you blokes bombing around with your motors. Would this type of 'attendance' be acceptable, or would i get grief for having a 993 car park show pony?. if so, do i have to ask permission to attend in the first place?, does anyone else just go to watch/chat, etc?. Brunters sounds like fun and i would like to bring the Digicam which i would eventually put on CD/DVD (assuming the footage was good enough)
You'll not have a problem turning up at most track days - but it's worth an e mail to the organiser to check. If you have a skid lid, take it as you can then blag some free rides!
As well as the piston crowd, I'd highly recommend www.Easytrack.co.uk, www.Motorsport-events.com and www.Bookatrack.com - all vey friendly and well run days.

Are you a member of the PCGB? If so you are entitled to spectate at PCGB events - which is F.O.C. I believe. If you want to passenger you'll need to donate a fiver to the organisers and sign suitable disclaimers.
Plenty of folks go to these things by themselves and are delighted to strike up conversation with other enthusiasts of the marque - just be friendly. You never know you may indeed get taken around the circuit.

i would agree with steve & don, most trackday organisers are happy to see a few interested people -- providing you check in with them -- after all that is a good way for them to market themselves and increase sales.
on the chat side i have thoroughly enjoyed not driving at a few trackdays -- had many good conversations, all at a more relaxed pace. when you have paid to drive you just want to get back out there and pile on the mileage.
RMA have a trackday at Bedford this saturday 28th -- how about turning up for that? i will be driving the white Porsche 968.

I've done this a couple of times and realised that the driving gets in the way of the social!!

All in all, a nice day out!! See you at Bedford on Saturday then!!

Veewhy,
Saturdays event at Bedford Autodrome is being organised by www.rma-limited.com/ they have contact details on the home page. You could call them and explain that you are 'tempted' by the delights of trackdays but would like a look first and see what they offer
Normally I just show up at days I'm not driving and tell the chap at the gate you're here to spectate and they wave you through.

I gave RMA a call, they said they were more than happy for me to come along to watch proceedings... if anyone's interested i'll be with the polar silver 993 with 'turbowhirly' wheels, apart from 'Legalboy and his 968, Who else is going?

Paul,
Firstly, apologies for thinking your name was 'Mark'???. I can't explain...
What was it like as a passenger. Well, it was a lot of fun, though you probably thought because i was so quiet while you were driving, that it may have not been 'doing it' for me, I can assure you it was. I was fairly quiet because I thought i ought to make the most of the experience by just watching (and learning) while you enjoyed yourself, I also didn't want to distract you too much, after all, it was your day, which you paid for. I suspect that if you hadn't given me your enthusiastic commentary, you would have been a fair bit quicker, so i thought if i kept my mouth shut, you'll go faster. The car is, as I said prevuiously, a really nicely balanced motor (yes you can feel it from the passenger seat as well), the thing i liked about it from a novice point of view, was that obviously it wasn't the quickest car there, which meant that you weren’t hitting those braking zones too fast (though no one can say you don't brake without full commitment), slow in, fast out, the proper way, right?. The best bit about it, (at the risk of incurring the lash of 'Domster') was feeling reassured that i was being driven by a capable driver. That made it a rewarding experience. I liked the car's mid range oomph and it's climb through the upper gears, coupled with it's ability to take the corners with surety, which really made it feel like we were on a racetrack. Eventually you began to push on once the tyres were warmed up and it was noticeable how much more the car began to come alive. I think the final testimony to the enjoyment factor was that I lost count of how many laps we actually did.

Dom, perhaps you could kindly post an official glossary of terms and metaphors that are regarded as acceptable on this forum for us 'newbies' not yet initatiated in the art of 'correct communication', i'm obviously doing something wrong, or should that be 'not cutting the mustard'?...
