Has anyone heard about this? Apparently one of the lib dems plans is to introduce a house levy on propertys worth over a million at 1%. I listen to LBC when on my travels and this topic was being discussed on james (I'm a raving leftie) O'brien's 10am show and various right minded individuals argued that this is a blatant tax on sucsess. O'brien's view was that if this tax affected you you would have to trade down your home to avoid paying it!

Surely this would have a detrimental affect on the housing market? There would be many homes left empty and un-sellable. I don't own my own home and doubt I would ever own a home of that value but I am sick to death of hard working people being punished for wanting a nice life.

So to anyone thinking of voting lib dem consider the fact that what you are actually voting for is a socialist utopia.

Yes, the idiotic thing is that one of their big bosses, Vince Cable, lives in SW London so should bloody well know that if we had another property boom, many of his constituency voters would clip the £1m mark. I'm sure a 4 bedroom house in Richmond could be around the £800k mark as it is.

The Queen would have to do this because politicians are up to their eyeballs in property but why not have a land value tax:-

http://www.landvaluetax.org/

The Land Value Taxation Campaign is a single-issue organisation based in the UK. It proposes that the rental value of land should be collected and used as the principal source of public revenue, as a replacement for present taxes on wages, profits, goods and services. This policy mitigates and may even eliminate chronic economic problems.

Why do all the political parties shy away from increasing income tax. We all hate it but better to be taxed a percentage of money that you earn than on something you have no control over.

Just because your house is worth x amount, does not mean you can afford to dole out extra money based on a percentage of it's value.

Houses used to stay in families but now they get sold so that the owner or beneficeries can pay off massive tax bills.

Such a shame.

Council Tax should also be based on your ability to pay as well.

The assumption that you have excessive liquid funds because your house is worth £1mm -£2m is flawed.

There are plenty of people whose house has increased in value, through no fault of their own, other than long term ownership within a family, who would not be able to pay such a tax.

Just shows Dem Libs have turned into socialists, just like dem Greens...

No I meant the pensioner who has lived in a house all their lives and just as it happens to be worth say £600,000, they get stung with a high council tax bill.

It's not that I disagree with the fact that we are in huge debt and need to get money from somewhere, and I agree in some ways that that those who can afford to put a little more in should but there are so many other ways to make this fairer. Cut benefits for long term unemployed, cut public spending by getting rid of some of these government think tanks and the like, deport ILLEGAL immigrants once and for all. If the lib dems came into power (they wont) what they will create is a country where wanting more and trying harder will be pointless. It could also push some of the wealthier family's to emigrate.

Britain's annual contribution to the EU averages £10½ bn a year. Not paying this would go some way in reducing the debt.

Not as idiotic people who love voting for them - it's 75% Lib Dems round SW - hence the size my friggin' council tax. Groan. And it goes up every year. I suspect some of that increase is Labour favouring their own councils so perhaps they aren't as wasteful as they appear to be. Don't know about Richmond, but a 4 bed in Putney is definitely knocking on a million but then that's Tory run.

There we are, wealth envy.
Everyone has wealth envy, who doesn't want to be wealthy?

Nice edit.

I don't hate wealth, I just find it hard to have any sympathy for people living in £1m+ houses.

I wonder if Vince Cable, the hand wringing "tax the rich bankers" cv t and champion of the council estate scumbag asked for the minimum wage when he was Chief Economist at Shell....? I'm sure he requested that his million pound salary waas given to charity. NOT.

There’s a big difference between wanting to improve your own financial situation and spouting jealous / envious nonsense.

In theory and isolated from reality, this is a good idea (IIRC parts of the US have a similar system) in the real world however, it would be a massive change to the UK's property market and would only be truly viable if it applied to all property, not just the expensive ones wink
