An employer lets staff who work away from home have occasional long weekends (i.e. home at a reasonable time Fri and leave early Mon - like a normal person would have every weekend).

The frequency varies by 50% between single and married employees, I don't think that's particularly fair. Married does not imply children/dependants, why should a married person see their partner more than an unmarried person?

Is this normal/legal?

Generally you shouldn't discriminate according to marital status (either way) and this is how it is generally stated in HR guides. However as far as I'm aware, the law actually only makes treating married persons worse than single persons illegal, not the other way round;

Yes/yes. You're not the first to be treated like this.

Assumed so, as a single white well-educated middle-class male, why should I expect any different.
