Lets face it any shop area in any village can be a chav magnet.
We all hung out somewhere as kids, my litle gathering used the canal and the rear of the gas works.
Lightwater is ok has some good amenities and shops.
Not known as a problem area, and has good mixture of housing.
Close to Bagshot for lively pubs, eating places and take outs.
Windlesham and surrounds, bit sleepy and one decent pub.
West End one crap pub and an over priced food / pub
Keep going to Bisley Hen & Chickens is my advise.
Chobham has a nice selection of eating places and pubs

In fact When I go to areas oopp North and in London, I dont feel particularly comfortable at all and am relieved to get back.They make Aldershot look posh.

Got a offer accpeted today so looks like i will be some peoples neighbours soon.
As ever there are always bad parts of areas. I used to live in Chiswick and next door is Acton......then moved to Richmond which still has bad parts.
Providing there are no stabbings and a load of break inns i am sure Lightwater will be ok.
Andy, have you any knowledge of Birchwood Drive?

Does anyone remember that traditional hardware store (the one that now looks like a mini B&Q, except with prices +100%)?
'The production team behind the popular BBC Series 'Mary Queen of Shops' visited Totally DIY this week with Tony Leach and Jane Curtis, owner and store assistant respectively at Lightwater Homecare, a diy and general store based in Lightwater, Surrey.
The store is taking part in the third series of 'Mary Queen of Shops', which will be aired on the BBC later this year, and neither Tony nor Jane had ever visited a diy trade exhibition before. They were given the chance to look around the show accompanied by retail guru and series presenter Mary Portas to check out the new products being offered by exhibitors.
The pair were then thrown in at the deep end when Mary announced that they would each have to give a live product demo in the show's New Product Piazza. Luckily Nigel Blow, a product manager from Toolbank, was on hand to help the pair quickly learn about the product they were about to demonstrate!
The first series of Mary Queen of Shops saw Mary Portas help turn around struggling clothing stores on the high street. However the latest series of the programme is about a broader range of independent retailers.
Lightwater Homecare is based in Guildford Road in Lightwater, Surrey, and Tony Leach also has two other stores nearby in Ascot and Knap Hill. The show will be screened on BBC2 later this year.'

I asked them in the shop (check out the hilarious life sized cut outs of the staff btw) if trade had increased. They said no, but had been told to 'give it time'. You have to take a look if you're passing, there's are so many wonderful cheesey features, I think there's a 'Tool Depot', 'Fix it Station' etc etc but the only thing they haven't changed is the staff who have the classic British, reasonably helpful if you ask them a question, but, wouldn't say ''hello'' as you walk in, smile or do the 'Pret a Manager' friendliness in a 1000 years.

Birchwood backs on to the bypass which isnt too busy most of the time.
At one end there is the park and if you back on to that you get a free fireworks display on Nov 5th.
seriously theres nowhere that is bad.The odd family down the avenue thats it.
for me the nearer the country park the better.

Birchwood backs on to the bypass which isnt too busy most of the time.
At one end there is the park and if you back on to that you get a free fireworks display on Nov 5th.

I am not all the way down Birchwood so its not backing onto the main(ish) road so there is no noisy.

One word of warning about this area is that everyone knows everyone's business and we don't socialise locally so no pub gossip. I was going on holiday and popped into the local newsagent to buy something or other and as I was leaving they reminded me to cancel our papers as the postman had mentioned he'd delivered our tickets!!! I can't get used to that.
On the plus side I had a prowler and the neighbours were brilliant, they were on the phone before the guy had cleared my side gate and the police response time is less than 5 mins :-) that's two squad cars !!!!!
Also the arboretum, if you have a dog, is fantastic.

Depending on your price range but there are some lovely houses on the market in the village at the moment, or you could rent one perfect family home to get a taste of the area and I could move back to Old Woking and sanity, I still own a house there. If I had children this house would be perfect, great schools within walking distance, ditto shops, Waitrose up the road and even a decent pizza delivery ! LOL

Its like desparate housewives,all the mums at the school know everything and take till 12 to walk home.I dont pay my tax bill at the post office either.Local post office master is the councellor.Handy to lobby for planning permission.
And the country park is NOT flat. The chips are good at the chip shop and the Indian always gives out popadoms which it why I go down there instead of phoning.
Just needs that vacant estate agents in the square to become a coffee bar and it will be complete.
and we have 2 pharmacies....why? we are all so healthy.

As for the chips...... I go to Jacks (not the one on the A30) but I'll give lightwater another go.
I can't think of any business that isn't catered for already apart from a tea shop, I've been told the little one in Windlesham Village does rather well.
