Cooling Fan Problem

Help please.
Blew the 40amp fuse on the cooling fan. Checked the otter switch which is ok.
Next checked each fan after shorting out otter switch, just one fan came on. I then changed the connector from the working fan the the other one. This fan worked.
So both fan motors are ok.
The problem lies with the wiring.
My question is - Is there a separate cable from each cooling fan motor to the relay, or does the cable split somewhere within the loom? How do I check for breaks?
Any help would be most welcome

On a 500 there are two relays , one for each fan. Maybe one of those is faulty.

Yes 2 separate cables all the way back to the fusebox. Just one connector just under the dash (left below windscreen edge) IIRC

Sorry guys forgot to say it is a 1995 Griff 500, which I believe has only one relay. I assume from Spend's reply that the cables terminate at the same place?

Mine is 96 500 and I had a similar problem. The earth cables are separate and one of mine was faulty. Just ran another earth down to the earth point on the offside front chassis.

Absolutly nothing wrong with my fans, otter, or wiring... It was just the current draw from both fans kicking in..

I fitted the modwise 2 stage cooling kit probably about 7 years ago now

I've never had a single problem since, cooling is far more controlled, never blown a fuse, never worry if the fans are going to cut in or not.... I just know it all works..

I would never go back to the single 40 amp

Don't assume entirely that there is only one fuse and relay. Mine ('95 500)looked like it only had one from the fuse box layout and when I had the same problem (only one fan kicking in) it took a trip to my Indie for them to dig out the extra relay and fuse that had been tucked down the back of the battery. It was this fuse that had gone - replaced it and all OK again.

You would be wisely employing your time by putting your multimeter (or even test lamp) across the 4 terminals. Knowing which of the 4 wires is the miscreant would be a good start. Even the modwise rewiring wouldn't fix it if one of the earths was broken IIRC.

Squashing the tab lock and withdrawing the spade terminals to clean up the connectors is always worthwhile, then reassemble with vaseline or the ilk.

I checked all 4 wires with the multimeter and got 15 vols on both live and good Ohms reading on both earth wires. When the miscreant live connections were connected and checked again under load there was zero voltage reading.
I swapped over relays to eliminate that as a problem.
Now I have no idea what the problem could be.
