Evening All,

I need to get a blind for the Velux-type window in our loft conversion. Looking on the web, blackout blinds are twice the price of non-blackout ones (around £75 vs £145ish).

Does anyone know how much light a non-blackout blind really lets through? I'm crap at getting to sleep if there's too much light in the room, but I don't want to spend the extra £70 if I don't have to.

I think you'll need blackout ones. If the normal ones were sufficiently opaque, they wouldn't need to sell blackout ones...

I had blackout blinds in my old property.

I managed to get a good deal on the solar powered ones from Ebay, Cant remember the sellers name but to say they were good is an understatement, they resulted in me regularly being late for work to the point I had to leave them open a bit to let some light in.

I wouldn't consider anything other than blackout blinds in a bedroom unless I lived in the absolute middle of nowhere.

Ok, thanks guys. Blackouts on order!

As for Turbo Cab, I don't have your problem. I have kids of 7,4 & 2 instead! hehe

Blackout definately. We don't have these, and our daughter wakes up at different times, depending on the time of the year...

You can get different types of film to put on glass these days, I have one on the front windows to get rid of UV, fantastic. No more faded furniture amongst the many other benefits. I'd say it was worth considering on a roof window.

Velux do a system where the blinds are operated with a remote control and the motors to raise and lower the blind are powered by solar power, very good system.

Cheers smile

I also found "Blight" blinds, although I don't think they're in production yet...

Blackout all the way for us, on all of the normal windows upstairs in the house. Cheap and easy to fit yourself.
