Now on the app store surprisingly. Just been having a play. Still feels more complex than Safari and not as much as a PC experience, but will give it a whirl.

I suspect that this has all come about on the back of the recent legals with Microsoft and third party browsers etc.

No reason for it to have.

iPhone is a closed platform, and by not approving one, then you don't have alternatives on the platform, and you can't be accused of making your browser intrinsic.

If anything, letting Opera Mini on will cause headaches, cause now Chrome will be lined up for it.

Gruber called it correctly.

Not sure it does a great job rendering HTML5 sites though. This tweet sums up how some feel about it.

The problem is that Opera will not spend huge amounts of time developing something if its just going to be un-approved by Apple. This first release is to see if Apple will let it through before they invest properly on the project.

So give it another chance folks!

You're probably right but they really do need to invest some time and I'm going back to Safari for now. I've not noticed Opera being any quicker under any circumstances than Safari and it seems to make it's own mind up whether it's going to follow a link that you "click". I also detest the fixed zoom so implementing proper pinch-to-zoom at any level needs to be top of Opera's list and scrolling around a zoomed page can also be a bit wild.

The only thing it seems better at is browsing on the train. Presumably this is because it needs to have a working connection for less time to download a given page so dropping connection as you move rapidly through cells is less of a problem. It'll stay on the phone for now but it's not guaranteed that it will stay for good.

Also, not sure about Chrome being lined up because the only reason Opera is on there is because of the server-side rendering. So, unless Google want to develop a Chrome mini they'll struggle to get through the rules.

There are 2 versions.. A free one, and a 'pro' version. (Why do they call them 'pro'? You see games version called 'pro'... What is 'pro' about a game?)

Really? Have you a link to the "Pro" one, can't find it on the App Store?

Been using it all day, certainly faster than Safari, but a bit rough around the edges. PH kept swapping itself between mobile and normal versions though.
