As part of my PhD writeup I have been trying to use ANSYS to perform FEA analysis of the stiffness of a MEMS structure. I've descrbied the structure using Beam4 elements but see crazyness when I apply a load - the EShape elements buckle/coil over where they evidentally shouldn't!

I've been failing with these annoying 'niggling' problems for a while and was wondering if anyone here knows how to use ANSYS well, as it may well be a case of 'ah you haven't used a correct orientation keypoint there' or something?

If so, I can email you a copy of my script file and talk you through it - lots of trig, but the underlying simulation should really be very simple - static beam displacement!

I was wondering if anyone here is able to offer assistance? I've had no joy in our Department as it doesn't really seem that many people use ANSYS here frown

Sorry for begging for help, but I'm pulling my hair out & PH seems like the sort of place where such people may lurk!
Kindest,

Stu

I am but I've not really got lots of time spare at the moment.
Good place to start is looking boundary conditions. Try doing a v simple object like a cube for which there isa known solution. If it doesn't work then your BCs are wrong.

Sounds like you're not mechanically oriented ? If so then attempting to use FE is fraught with problems - do you really need to ?
Can you not describe it in closed form using beam theory ? FBD - resolve forces and calulate displacements ?

If you must use an FE package then ANSYS is not the most user friendly.
Try joining iMechanica or some such and consult the FAQs or post queries.

Good luck.
