fitting rear mesh

The mesh in the rear clam where the number plate sits seems oddly fitted. It is double folded to hold it in and looks a mess. Has anyone fitted it using a different method? Also the lip on the clam that the mesh sits on looks like it could be trimmed away to improve cooling. It would also make it easier to fit the mesh as it could sit inside the clam.
Any ideas anyone?

Is the opening edges trimmed right back? I wasn't sure if the lip added strength, I don't want it to crack.

The number plate is normal size, it's a very large car sir

I doubt that it will crack, that part of the clam is very strong, the opening is as large as possible in the area of the old grill.
