Hi

I have bought a Belkin ASDL Modem Router and a Belkin Wireless card thing for my laptop so I can roam the house as free as a bird and surf the net etc etc. However, I am on NTL 1 Meg broadband and I can't seem to get the connection between the NTL modem and the Belkin wireless modem to work.

Have I got the right bit of kit or am I wasting my time?

Cheers

John

Right,

I went back to the world of pcs this morning and they told me I could not get a wireless modem for an NTL cable connection and I have to buy a new modem from NTL.

Is that true?

If it is not true could someone steer me in the right direction?, I have the Belkin wireless cards for my laptop so I would like a Belkin wireless modem if such a thing exists.

Thanks for your help.

Steve,

I was just looking at your website!

Anyway, I connect it using the USB port on the back of my laptop.

The staff at those chains are all morons.

Get something like a Netgear RP614 router. It takes the signal from your cable modem and sends it to four ethernet ports. You plug the wireless access point into one port and you are home in a boat.

Edit - just noticed that you have a USB connection. You therefore need wither a new cable modem with ethernet instead of USB or to find a router that will take a USB connection form the cable modem. I don't know of any product that fits the bill.

Loads!

Sorry to be a pain and you all make it sound so simple but can you post a link on what I need so I don't end up wasting my time buying something that I don't need.

Also can I use my Belkin cards with another modem?

The site is being updated day by day.

Ragrding the router i am not to sure about the kit that is needed, as you have the USB modem. If you had a CAT5 Cable interface its makes it a lot simpler.

Some of the other may know the right bit of kit. But my suggestion would be a new Cable modem with intergrated firewall and wireless router.

Sorry i cant be of much more help

Also when i had the ntl connection a while ago the modem was dual standard network card interface and USB interface.

If you have a grey looking NTL modem you should have the option on the back for a network cable interface and hence the Router that you purchased may have worked

Had identical problem a few weeks back.
My last modem only hade a usb connection.

You need a new modem with a ethernet connection.
All the wireless routers only connect through ethernet.

Best to buy a modem/router in one sort of like this www.shop.bt.com/invt/006743

Or get NTL to provide a new modem.

there is one other solution... use your usb modem and install a proxy server on the machine with the modem connected.

get a wireless access point.

set up the other wireless machine to use the ip of the proxy server as the internet gateway and away you go.

the only draw back - you need to leave the internet connected machine (proxy server) on in order to access the web.

i am doing it right now (on isdn) whilst I wait for broadband to come to the wilds of hampshire in april.

of course its a work around and you still need to buy some new kit... but its another marginally cheaper and somewhat short term limited option.

drop me an email if you decide to have a go and need a hand.

Bit late to this, but never mind.

I have NTL, and my modem is ethernet (I'm mac-head) Got a Linksys wi-fi router from amazon for 50GBP, and it is great, really strong signal anywhere in the house, even through 3 victorian walls.

Just contact NTL and tell them you need an ethernet cable modem. If they ask why you want to change, you can say you are moving to a mac (which they don't have the USB software for )

Sparks,
Which wireless cards are you using?
I've got the belkin ones & they can't get a signal through my victorian walls.

Badapple,

I have macs, so my single card in the laptop is from apple, and fits in an internal slot (no external pcmcia). I'm not sure of the brand though.

I think the Linksys has alot to do with it (two external aerials), and the laptop has an internal aerial, that plugs into the card.

I don't think I have had less than 40% signal anywhere in the house.

If your pcmcia cards only have the 'blob' aerial, this may be your problem. Also the router may have a pcmcia on board, which will give poor performance.
