I'm stripping son's 911 engine (lots of broken exhaust studs) and can't find a P201 (type) "engine holding fixture" to help with rebuild. They are available from across the pond from "Sir Tools" at great cost! Anyone seen a P201, or something similar, for sale or hire in the UK?

Grateful for any help / advice.

You really don't need one, just get yourself to Machine Mart and buy one of these heavy duty engine stands:

www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=020110465&r=2050&g=107

We have a couple of engine cradles that I had an engineering shop make for me some years ago (over £150 each to make), but in addition we have three of these stands that we use when busy (all the time!). Normally we use the cradles for full engine rebuilds and the stand for top ends where the crankcase is not split apart.

Obviously you have to remove the flywheel before you can fit the frame and can only use it with an assembled crankcase, but this is no great hardship since once the engine is disassembled down to the cases it can easily be lifted onto a bench and stripped there.

To fit it onto a 911 engine you will have to redrill two of the arms in order to get them to correctly fit the four engine studs, then file away the inside edge of the mounting tubes to clear the step op the back of the crankcases and make up some spacer tubes to slide over the back of the studs to save having to pack the studs with a ton of washers.

If you are still not sure about the description mail me offline and I will send you a digi-photo of one of the Machine mart frames built up for the 911.

Thanks for that 9M but son has just informed me he has ordered a "ring" from the US which is adapted to fit onto the Machine Mart stand (which we already have).

We'll see how that goes, in the meantime I very much appreciate you taking the time and effort to keep us "new boys" on track. No doubt I will be back seeking more advice. Thanks.
