I was speaking to a collegue at work last week as he is the only lad left in our office of 10 twenty year olds not to have an iphone...after showing him the iphone.tvcatchup.com link he was adement about buying one!

Later that week he found a link on a gadget website about the new iphone in June and some leaked images regarding the 5mp Camera as the camera developers had a demo. Anyway he has lost the link and i cant find it anywhere, but does anybody have any info on this at all? Or links to images of the new phone, ive heard its more of a square shape with a polished metal case on the rear.

Also will it be a case of a "free upgrade" midway through your contract to the new model by just extending your current contract? As this happened with a couple of mates through the carphonewarehouse when upgrading to 3G

Why are people calling it the 4G iPhone? It will not be a 4G device, the definition - "4G is the short term for fourth-generation wireless, the stage of broadband mobile communications that will supersede the third generation (3G). Neither standards bodies nor carriers have concretely defined or agreed upon what exactly 4G will be..." so people saying it will be called iPhone 4G are wrong. Not having a go at anyone on this thread, but its just annoying!

Maybe they simply means the 4th generation iPhone? I wouldn't get yourself all worked up about it.

I doubt it. I think most saying 4G actually think it's a 4G, not 4th generation.

Anyway, it's (if it happens) is the 3rd generation (if you class the 3GS as an upgrade rather than a new version like the 3G was.

Anyway, how did they grasp the concept of the 3G when it was the 2nd generation biggrinbiggrin

The 4G, 5G, etc for generations was used when referring to ipods and it's kind of stuck. It all got confusing for some when Apple released the iPhone 3G - as in 3G network, not the third generation of iPhone.

As ever, don't believe any rumours you read. Apple will have an event closer to the time to announce it and most of the rumours will inevitably be wrong. About the only announced thing on new iPhones is that the new OS 4.0 will be out in the "summer". Last year the 3.0 version was announced in spring, out in summer in time for the 3GS.

Personally I'm just hoping for a minor evolution again - same form factor, new OS, bit quicker, slightly better camera, more memory for the same price - to replace my 3G.

Just to add to the confusion, OS 4.0 has been announced too - so people will inevitably call it the 4G, no matter whether it's technically right or not.

I have a 3G and can upgrade now, however I'm just going to wait and see what comes this summer - feel no reason to go from 3G to 3GS !

Given that the G in iPhones is the notation for the 3G network, I suspect the new iPhone will be called something like 3G'something', e.g. 3GT, 3GR, 3G+ etc. Maybe they'll get rid of the 3G moniker completely as it was used to differentiate the original iPhone and the replacement 3G network version. This is no longer needed, so maybe iPhone+ or something.....

If they do call it the 4G (they won't) there's a problem when and if the real 4G networks come along and it's not "compatible" even though the name alludes so....

Personally I'm hoping for new iPhone to be faster, better battery, improved wi-fi (my laptops can get a signal far better than an iPhone can), maybe smaller (but keeping the same size screen) or same size but bigger screen within. Given that they've already announced the OS, I don't think there'll be any radical change/departure anyway.

Personally do not give a hoot about camera megapixels though, at the end of the day it's the lens that really defines how good a camera is and phones (and cheap cameras) are always limited in this respect.

If the 1G iPhone was called the 2G because it was on a 2G network, then the 2G iPhone became the 3G, then we got the 3GS that was still only on 3G and now we're looking at a 3G phone that should be called a 4G but because we aren't yet 4G it might not be, get it? confused

It didn't quite go like that.

You had the original iPhone which was just called the iPhone. Then when it was able to use the 3G networks you got the iPhone 3G. An improved version of this was then the iPhone 3GS so as people have already said, the next one should be the 3Gsomethingelse.

I'm holding out for the next generation one before I upgrade from my 3G.

I've read a few reports that it might be an OLED screen, which will make it a lot slimmer and therefore lighter.

I agree on the better wifi, mine has an appalling range.

Arrrrr but you're confused wink the original was the base line so 1G but on 2G, then came the 3G on 3G which should really have been called the 2G but wasn't, so next up was the 3GS still on 3G which should have really been called the just the 3G but couldn't be, so next we get what should be called the 4G but will still be 3G but better than the 3GS, so it might be called the 4G, the 3G2G, 3G3G the 3GS2G, or even the 4G3G or 4G3GS2G :evenmore:confusedhehe

If you're on O2 it might be worth going onto their iPhone simplicity contract - rolling 1 month contract that, for me at least, works out at half the price per month.

Yep, likewise, have just done this myself (though only because the retentions staff sold it to me if I'm honest).

Also, point to note, if you go to the carphonewarehouse, they'll do you either an O2 simplicity 1mth rolling contract with unlimited text and data and 600mins for £20, or the Vodafone equivalent - IIRC, if you go to O2/Voda direct, they'll only give you 600 mins and 600 texts for the same price.

Think I'll be changing to Vodafone shortly - O2 signal is gash in the new forest!

Exactly, thats why I'm getting pissed of at people who think the next generation will be called the iPhone 4G, I know this is petty but it just shows a total lack of understanding.
