we need to implement an online backup procedure for all laptops, but just looking at what options are available.

Any recommendations? And I mean, recommendations, not ones to check out!

Have you considered Jungle Disk with Amazon online storage. It is easy to implement and good value for for money

Might be worth getting the users to do the initial backup on site if there is a lot of data.

A bit more context would be useful as I've been faced with this problem.

In our situation we have file servers and storage and the laptops were frequently on-site and connected to the LAN, the people using them were just too lazy/dis-organised to bother.

We went for a product called Druva, which sits on a server on your LAN and the clients run software which seamlessly backs up i.e. the user doesn't even have to remember to push a button, and if for some reason they don't get backed up the product emails you as the administrator.

The storage is de-duped which was useful as in our case it was mainly sales people who all had the same 20gb of presentations on their laptops.

I'd recommend it based on our experiences and ease of use combined with the relatively low cost.
