Hi,

Having owned my current E60 M5 for several months I'm already thinking ahead and I reckon that at the end of the Summer it'll be going, although a lot depends on my job and how much mileage I'm going to end up doing. 16mpg isn't going to be great if I'm doing 100+ miles a day.

So I've been thinking where do I go to next?

I don't think the M5 is particularly expensive to run for what it is:-
Insurance quote on a similar 535D M Sport came in at £40 a year less.
Tyres, if they're 19's then they're the same price no matter what car they're going on.
Servicing, I've just done the oil change, brake fluid etc, etc and the M5 doesn't need anything until it's MOT next March.

I suppose I'm looking for all the performance of an M5 with more reasonable running costs. I thought about an E46 M3 but then perhaps a newer shape 335i would be a bit cheaper to run but a better car over all?

Decisions, decisions - perhaps I should get mine converted to LPG and then I'm sorted ;-)

Have you considered an E62 M3? I made the move a few weeks ago and haven't regretted it one bit smile

I averaged about 14mpg in the M5 and the M3 is returning a whopping 19mpg to date! Seems marginal but that is a trip to my office extra for every gallon smile

E62 M3? I know the E46 and E90/92 but not the E62?? Isn't the E62 the M6?

Yeah I have but they're a bit expensive at the moment as I'd want the DCT version... I paid £35k for the M5 and that's probably my maximum to spend on anything again.

I understand your concerns, I was originally after a DCT, but after driving a manual I realised I missed it and went for it!

Cant say I miss it to be honest, the manual is a joy to use on open roads and I dont miss the clunky gear confusion at low speeds in traffic which the M5 and CSL had.

If you live in a city I can see why you would want it though.

If £35k is your top budget you could get a nice 2007 manual M3 for that, I wouldn't rule it out without a test drive, and at 420bhp it is pretty even stevens with the M5 on pick up until you get into triple figures smile

Don't laugh but how about a remapped 635 diesel or an Alpina B5 saloon!

I had been looking at a remapped 535D but as I said the insurance wasn't much less and I think all I'd save is fuel costs? Never driven one either so perhaps I should.

Would servicing and general day-to-day running of anything with the 3 litre twin turbo diesel be a lot less?

I think that you will notice a number of savings, obviously fuel, but the cost of servicing will be upto 25% less as will parts and consumables etc. Go for a drive. look at the spec on a car and you may well be surprised about how well they go...then get it chipped by Evolve or DMS.
