How do I increase website popularity ?

Hi All,

I brother has a company that does packaging (blister packaging and thermo forming) and has a website .. he pays people like Yell to be listed and also a company that supposedly increases the web rankingf but I myself tried these and found it was money down the drain.

Does any one have any tips or is there a way to just pay google to increase ranking or be a sponsor for a link subject ? If so - how do we contact them ?

What is the site, and what words would he like to be first for? You can get much better results by improving the basic website content. Beyond that there are 'tricks' but search engines tend to take a dim view of them; it's more honest just to sponsor some words on google.

You can pay Google to get sponsered listings (the ones on the right when you search for stuff), you then pay each time someone clicks on them.

But you can't pay Google to get high up in the normal rankings.

SEO is an expertise in itself, lots of companies now specialise in helping other companies get up the search results. PHer DickDastardly runs an SEO company if you want to use one.

He also does PPC (sponsored links) as that's quite a specialist skill too - it's easy to blow a lot of money if you just follow Google's recommendations.
