Cracking AP Calipers Anyone?

Appear to have spent every spare moment in recent months (started November) working on my Cerbera...starting to re-assemble hubs (off the car as I have to fit wisshbones and rest of suspension), this now gets me round to cleaning up those AP Racing calipers...which look less than two years old..still have stickers etc etc ...

Anyway sprayed bleed nipples with releasing fluid...leave for a while....both move work the thread forwards and backwards...spray again...leave for a while ...work thread again...out one comes...the otherside is moving along nicely.....and is moving along nicely ...and keeps turning...thinks to myself...this should be just about there ...look at the otherside... of the threaded cast....there is a crack...about 4mm long running from the exit end of the bleed nipple downwards.......

Been spending most of the week trying rectify this problem...

Best thing is had a quick go at the rears ...one moved freely...three aren't!

Anyone else had similar expperience with the bleed nipple area giving way?

Thanks for this...I have been searching for the outer face of the 6-bolt version now for two days...tried Belhill, Douglas Valley, TVRGlenn ...plus many other places...

Ideally I want to keep the same 6 bolt caliper...so question is has anyone got a passenger side front caliper for a 99 cerb 450?

It does not need to be the whole caliper just the outer half of the unit...the rest of it is ok..

I have been advised that Plasticman might be a point of contact or perhaps brummiewedge..anyone got thier numbers?

Steve,

Get in touch with B G Developments and ask them what can be done. I don't know if someone could weld up the crack and tap a new the thread for you, but it might be worth a go. They're Midlands based too.

Thanks for this Steve...the crack is probably 10mm long at most from the top of the bleed screw down..

A very trusted and knowledgeable engineer mate (runs a cerb 450 LW) popped round Monday said no it's scrap...spoke with Jay at Power, then Dave Porter and Paul (PPC) all said don't repair ..so daren't go that way now ...take my 7 yaer old and far better half out in the car ...and above all else want confidence in brakes...

That said really appreciate the contact...who knows what i will end up doing...apear to have spnet most of this week on the mobile..thought Bell Hill had found one earlier on today but was a four bolt version off a speed 6 cerb..

Thing is I really like the calipers that are one the car ...perhaps i should have handed the calipers over to AP to refurb in the first place..but thought I was doing the right thing...hey ho...still got a clutch to fit yet...never done that before either..intend to drop the box over the next week..

..have a few other "irons in the fire too" including the possiblity of a nearside front in Japan!...Honest.

.but judging by the results I have drawn so far I have reached a tumbleweed response...that said folk have put themselves out and looked all over the place for a replacement..which is appreciated

Have you tried Hexham for a new calliper? they seem to have everything in stock which I've ever needed.

Russ...for your info...called these folk they used to supply the cosworth rear calipers to TVR but not the fronts which were AP...thanks all the same.

To be honest I want to stick with the original caliper..

.they worked well.looked right plus

...I don't intend to track the car (certainly on a regular basis) so left with a waiting game...

Was over @ TVRPower at lunch there was an early Tuscan there with the 6 bolt caliper on ...so widens the search a little...

Anyway took half day leave ...made a nice cover plate for the battery area and made a template for my far better half to cut and machine fabric heatsheild for the passenger side...she has done a top job...did a shed load of other stuff too...painted up new ball joints and finished chassis repaint..

.now to get the engine mounts back on and drop the prop and gearbox...whip the clutch out and find a place to refurb - replace....
