Try disconnecting the battery for a minute, remove both terminals and then reconnect, my E46 M3 Bluetooth module used to jam up regularly and I had no audio whatsoever, this cured it everytime, inconvenient but it was far easier (and cheaper) than a new module.

Might not work for your I drive but there's no harm in trying it

Mine did this and i rang the dealership. Apparently, leaving it for 15 or 20 mins is not enough. It resets itself after a couple or three hours.

I left mine for that length of time and it worked and never did it since.

My old 54 plated 535d had a couple of issues with iDrive freezing up. If your car is still under warranty and you have the time I would book it in and get it sorted...they will probably update all the software for you at the same time.

Give it the 3 finger salute - press CD eject, DVD eject and on/off buttons simultaneously to force a reboot.

Hard battery reset.

CD ejection stuff.

Also, double check the wiring behind the dvd module thing.

My 2008 335d did this a couple of times - iDrive crashed and rebooted while I was driving. Software update cured it.

This could be due perhaps to the circa £1900 for a new idrive control unit! - I bet he's absolutley fuming if it indeed turns out that's what it is.

I read recently of someone with similar issues and managed to find a second hand one at like £1100 !

I predict in 10 years time, the myriad of BMW's Audi's Merc's (and other marques) with these controller type interfaces that interact with all sorts of systems in the car giving up !

I think I'm going to open a repair centre.. oops, was that out aloud?!

Hopefully it's something much cheaper for the OP - and it'd be good if they came back with an update.

Cheers, Dennis.

Think about the Maestro, or any of the 80s corvettes. Technology is a bit mroe readily vailable these days, although I am interested to see what the electronics setup is like, ie is it more like a bdised PC or an overrated ECU. Not looked into BMWs setup too much but i am old Audi man to heart, is there any equivalent to VAGcom i can introgate the ECU with?

The OP did reply yesterday... albeit it took over 24 hours to reply to the request, which is clearly a black mark in some peoples book! However, thanks for helping me find a resolve, its appreciated. Hope this thread saves someone else in the future, and that i dont have to do this too often.

When you had put your original post on first thing on thursday it was disappointing that by friday evening you didnt seem to be going to reply. Often people put queries on here and people take the time to respond in order to help out - then we never hear back from them, which, as you said doesnt help anyone with a future problem of the same time.

Of course this is all now a moot point as you did subsequently respond!

Moot indeed... I felt the "cant be bothered to reply" was a bit unwarranted, if it was a week later fair enough... I (like to think) I help out a fair few folk on the VAG section, so i understand where you coming from. I could get pretty pissed off with the reply, but whats the point. Thanks for the help everyone.
