Hi,

I've been given some nice nike irons and have been slowly learning golf at the driving range. Its now time to pick up some woods, i dont want to spend much, as little as i can really. Ive seen the following, either new or 2nd hand

Dunlop 65i woods set (1,3,5)
Wilson Prostaff woods set (1,3,5)

Which ones should i go for? if not what ones should i be aiming to get for upto £100 (for all free) im willing to look at 2nd hand ones on ebay ect.

Thanks

How good are you?

I play off 24 and have found the best driver for me to be a 12degree Slazenger scorcher 2, very easy to get up in the air and go 250yd regularly, also quite dificult to slice (for me at least!)

I have dunlop max (65i I think) 5 and 3 woods and find I hardly use them, they go OK though i suppose. But my 21 degree cheapy hybrid goes as well as my 5 wood and I'm not a massive hitter with the driver so the 3 wood doesn;t seem to be needed.

I also use Nike irons by the way, and love them.

FYI, the slazzy driver cost me £15, and the 3 & 5 woods were £9.99 each.

Golf is so subjective and down to personal tastes that you really have to work out what suits you best.

I have always had a separate driver to my 3&5 woods

I'm an intermitment player now since no's 1 & 2 of the clan have arrived. I was low twenties, high teens at best but have given up keeping this up to date.

I rarely use my 5 wood as I get equivalent distance and better accuracy from a 4 or 3 iron, I only use it if the ball is lying very well in the first cut of rough as it is less likely to turn the head due to the shape.

The 3 is very rarely used (never of the fairway) and in fact I'm just going to transfer it out of the bag for another wedge or a dedcated driving iron.

The reason is that the a big headed titanum driver at 12 degrees is so much more forgiving than a focused 3 wood off the tee, If I want height rather than range I just tee it up a bit more and put the ball a bit further forward in my stance, then slow the swing down to insure a better level of accuracy.

I really would question ultra cheap stuff as there are so many wonderful drivers available for less than £100 so give them a try, I'm sure your range/course will let you try out a few driver or wood sets and go with what you like rather than just get the cheapest offer on at the moment which will do nothing for your game.

Look at MD Golf Superstrong woods, I've got a 15* 3 wood and 21* hybrid and I think they're excellent. The driver's RRP is £99 and the fairways and utilities are £69.99 each.

I'd get the driver too if I hadn't just spent a packet on a Ping Rapture V2 hehe
