I have a newish iPhone 3G at work and for some reason it has stopped making calls, though it has a fine 3G signal and can connect to internet sites without any problem.

It has 5 little dots then O2-UK in the reception status (without any bars) and seems to be connected to the network, but every call I make just gets a failed notice, and it won't receive calls either.

The sim works fine in other phones, just not this one and I am flummoxed on how to fix it. I have tried a full reset and that didn't work.

Anyone had this problem with theirs, or know a way to fix?

Failing that, buy mine. Just put it on eBay...

Exactly the same happened to a friend of mine's - it's buggered, basically.

It wouldn't receive texts very well either. All of which took a few days to work out!

He took it to the Genius bloke and they confirmed it was up the spout, so said go home back everything up because they will give a new phone for it, but not transfer any data at all - you need to do that yourself.

Was going through the solve myself route first, then PH (as usually PHers know more than a phone centre), before giving up and phoning O2.

As Tony said, if it is the phone that is knackered, and it's within 12 months of you first getting it, take it to an Apple Genius Bar. They'll diagnose it and then replace it for you if they can't fix it, all there and then.

Again, as Tony said, allow the phone to do a full backup via iTunes prior to taking it there as you won't get nowt of your data back on the new one! Then when you get home, you can do a restore and you're back where you left off minus a broke phone.

Are you in London? O2 have been having some trouble with their 3G network which has caused this problem quite a bit. Switching to 2g sorts it. Some days 3g works, some days it doesnt.

I am in London, but the 3G or turning it off and using 2G/Edge works perfectly fine. It is just the reception for calls doesn't work in either mode.

It's a friends smile

I still have my lovely, reliable, solid, drop resistant, metal 16GB 2G iPhone.

Ah right, when we switched all ours to 2g it sorted the calls aswell.

A restore will fit most things and you should do that before going into an Apple store. To save time however try a system reset. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Setting. I had a simiar problem with my 3g connection and this worked a treat.

Might not work but defo worth a go!

I did try this and it didn't work, though it did go through a period of having No Signal for a while until I reset, and then went back to the five dots and O2 bit as before.

I also assume to normal tech response of "turn it off and back on again" has been done. If so, have you tried a hard reset by holding down both the home and sleep buttons for about 5 seconds until it turns off/restarts?
