Freelanders are very good in soft mud and crossing fields if they have decent tyres and traction control. A set of BFG all terrains will cope with all on and off road stuff you'll ever do.
The lack of ground clearance is an issue but a steel sump guard is a wise investment, painful experience here!
Will be more car like and if you get a td4 then you can expect roughly 35-38mpg in general driving,
Check the VCU though! A knackered one can chew the rest of the transmission and take out the IRD unit and the rear diff mounts. Theres plenty of info online to find out how to check it.

thanks for the info guys. sounds like it might be just what i need, i dont do enough serious off roading to warrant the defender but its nice being able to hose the mud and crap out the back after i've been out with the dog. been thinking about a subaru forester but estate cars just start to smell bad after a while and get ditched inside.
