After a long line of 2 seater exotica, i want a drop top for me, the boss and my two young boys. Wondering about a Spyder which seems to tick most boxes. I've driven 4200s and liked most things about them. Anyone with experience of the Spyder they can share, or offer advice on what to avoid?

Cheers

Well worth doing a search on here and then also on www.maseratiforum.co.uk.

You know the Spyder is a 2 seater, so the boys will be arguing a lot! smile

Nothing more to look for or avoid than any other car of its type.

The floor shifters seem to think their (frankly rubbish) manual is the bees knees compared to the CC, CC owners know the paddle shift is better. hehe

Can you guess there's a bit of a divide in opinion?

Your best bet is to go and drive one, see what you think. It really is personal opinion.

I've had mine 4 years now, love it. Have been thinking of changing it for a while, looking at a G or G Spyder, but I walked past it last night and thought soddit, I'm going to hang on to it for the forseeable.

I mean, I know a G is probably better looking, and a bit faster, and a lot more desirable (hmmm, actually, should I, shouldn't I....), but the Maser is stupidly fast enough, excellent for long journeys, insurance is cheap, running costs are roughly half of a Lambo, and it is a nice looking motor.

There is something quite nice when you go out of an evening to be able to say "Shall we take the Maser".

Also, you can leave it parked in the street and nobody will even look at it. Can't do that with a Lambo.

I'm guessing if you wanted it for a family, you didn't realise it's only got two seats?....

The new GranCabrio is a 4 seater, but there's quite a long waiting list already.

HTH.

i had one for a while and really liked it. Nicely built, reliable, pretty fast and quite cheap really. I wouldnt say its an outright sports car, more like a merc sl alternative. Post 04 models have less scuttle shake and glass rear window. Servicing costs were about 800/1200 minor/major. CC gearbox i liked, didnt find it much different to the F430s, you just have to learn how to use them a bit. One of the cars i have had which i would have again.

research well before buying though as some things are expensive, plent of advice on forums to steer you. As previous poster said its a 2 seater, spyder has a shorter wheelbase than the coupe so no rear seats.

This man talks sense apart from the manual vs cc bit where he is clearly talking gibberish.
I've had mine for 3 years, have been looking at an AMV8 Roadster rather than a G but decided the same.
You'll see less Maser Spyders than practically anything else.

Tch. Who wants a manual sports car? F1 shift is the way forward, it's working for Vettel this year, so good enough for me. You don't see the F1 boys fiddling around with clutches and changey sticks, far too much effort.

Flappy paddles are the future. Get used to it.

wink

I did say there was a difference of opinion!

(Actually, this is just a wind up - I tried both manual and CC before I purchased, nothing wrong with the manual at all, I just preferred the CC - it really is personal preference!)

I've had mine for several years now. Manual, blue with cream leather and a quicksilver exhaust that I had put on. Bliss. Weekend car mainly but I've done a continent run in it and various trips round the north of Scotland and it has been perfect.

Sometimes I think about swapping it over and getting an AM v8 roadster or a 360 spyder but pound for pound I just can't see that I'll get anything more. And, it's a Maserati - the coolest car brand on the planet right now;)cool

Hasn't cost me anything other than routine servicing from a specialist. the odd electrical glitch but you learn to live with them! All in, a great car that gets attention for all the right reasons.

Agreed, a couple of years ago I was promised by the dealer a replacement for the Spyder. It's hardly that, it's a completely different concept.

I guess with Maserati being the Ferrari 'luxury GT' brand, there's no need to compete with zippy 2 seater Ferraris.

Shame, if there was a 2 seater Granturismo soft top, I'd be asking the bank manager to buy me one.

ive gone from maser to 430 spider to 911 turbo if there had been a smaller maser in the 60-70k bracket i would have had it. probably the 911 is a better car but i have a soft spot for maserati having had 4
