Alright guys,

I had a beta copy of windows 7 on my pc which had expired and caused it to reboot all the time.

so I wiped the pc and tried to put my copy of xp media center onto the pc as its only used for gaming. However upon installing it it appears that the copy I have is missing some vital files and I cannot get onto theinternet as none of the networking components seem to be on there...

So I went and downloaded a xp pro torrent from the net with code etc, it was in the correct format (I forget what its called) I burnt it to a disc asked pc to bgoot from cd, and it says error??

All the people on the torrent said it works fine, what the hell am I doing wrong?

And if I own a legit copy of media center but the discs are shot can I get new ones, or get round it?

Thanks!

It says "error"? or does it tell you what the error is?

You're not giving us much to go on here.

that's your problem, right there,
how can you be sure that you have downloaded, from some dodgy P2P site a pukka copy of XP Pro ?

you're not trying to install XP Media Centre with an XP Pro key code, are you ?

Well it all boots fine, and gets onto the desktop, but there is nothing in network connections. And internet explorer is un-operational despite having ethernet drivers installed, and a working cable plugged in..checked the registry as per the windows site and everything there looks as it should..

Odd.

because other people have left comments saying it worked fine for them!

no I have the correct code etc from the sticker, but as above, no signs of networking when I have installed.. It says its got sp2 when I check device manager so that's all up to date, just not sure what is wrong with it..

run command prompt and type 'ipconfig'

Check you have an IP address and gateway that are on the same subnet as your home network.

Normally you won't have to worry as your internet ADSL/clable router will be set up with DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which automatically sets your PC up with the correct IP details.

run the ipconfig command and look at your configuration it will be something like:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.254

if its something odd then go to your network settings and ensure that the automatically detect network settings (or whatever its called) box is selected.

I have a legit copy that I did buy, but it has an issue, I don't want to spend more money if I can get around the issues with my legit copy of media center.

Have you checked the actual file structure of the CD, it's not a ISO image is it that you have just dumped to disk? (just checking)

Your 100% genuine, shrink-wrapped copy of XP Media Centre is "missing some vital files"?

I think the key point is that even if you install XP there is no saying that all the drivers are going to be included.

Go back to media centre and use another computer to just download the correct drivers for your network cards etc. Doesnt matter what you install MC/XP etc the chances are you will need seperate drivers anyway.

Lookup your pc make and model number or even go to the manufacturers website and download the drivers, whack them on a usb stick or cdr and then install them on the pc once you have a operating system installed.

Just asked my housemate to run it again, and apparently its asking for a disc that we don't have.. that would explain it.. Its obviously been lost..Its not disc 1 or 2, but an extra cd with drivers and bits on it...

Anywhere I can get a replacement?

Its OS problems, as in its missing some parts. Not PC or component related.

I've asked him to tell me. Its annoying. But I guess when I find out the name of said disc I can get a copy.
