Were going to Bermuda ... what to do instead?
Discussion
Chaps,
One for people with a bit more imagination than I have.
Mrs zcacogp and I are booked to go to Bermuda tomorrow, for a week. For obvious reasons, it is looking unlikely that we will be going! Mrs zcacogp is therefore quite depressed, and we are needing to think of something else to do for the week, which doesn't involve flying!
So, criteria are thus, given that we have the time booked off work, a house-sitter in to feed the cat and no appointments in the diary:
- No aeroplanes. All other options are open
- Could stay in the UK, could go abroad on Eurostar or Eurotunnel or by boat
- Going this weekend, back next weekend
- Preferably something warm - Mrs zcacogp was looking forward to some sunshine (Farmhouse with big fire in Cornwall would be an option, but doesn't count on the 'Warm' front.)
- Would quite like to drive. I'd quite like to point the 944 across the channel and have a look at France, but whereabouts would you go? (Millau Bridge - how do you get there? What about the Route Napoleon ... ) BUT non-car options are open as well - it's not an essential
- Have done Paris/Prague/most other 'city-break weekend destinations' recently and don't want to do them again
- Would like to avoid hoards of other tourists, and see something slightly cultural and interesting
So ... all suggestions welcomed! I am inclining towards somewhere in Europe, and go to some of the less-visited bits, but that is only an idea.
Thanks.
Oli.

I am guessing you will be wanting some sunshine.
So how about somewhere like Abruzzo, Italy. I enjoy driving down there and it is a beautiful region.
Driving down can be nice through France or through Germany/Switzerland. It is a long drive.
However I should really be plugging my mum and dad's Chambre D'hotes in Gers. Which is in the same region (Midi Pyrenees) as the Milau Bridge. Although is a couple of hours away. So maybe heading to Perpignam or Carcassone as it is a bit warmer than closer to the Pyrenees.

Bit of a drive but me and my girlfriend stayed in a really nice little town in the south of France called Uzes - just west of Avignon. It's a small Duchy belonging to the First Duke of France.Visited Aigues Mortes and the Camargue region, Saint Marie de la Mer, the Pont du Gard and a couple of other places whilst there - all within an hours drive and well worth the visit. Not far from Mont Ventoux aswell (where the memorial to Tommy Simpson is) although the mountain was closed due to snow once we got halfway up. You can also look round the palace in the centre of Uzes belonging to the Duke.
We were there a fortnight ago and the weather was great. I highly recommend the Maison de la Bourgade as a place to stay, and with it being early in the season there may be places at short notice. Good restaurants in the town, nice cafes, great local wine and the Wednesday morning market is definitely worth a look.
Highly recommend a visit.

We spoke to BA. Our CEO is stuck in the UK at the moment and is booked on Sunday's flight. We spoke to BA and was told they'll be commencing flying on Sunday...
Might be worth giving them a call and getting an update tomorrow. If you're happy to miss one day of your holiday then try and get on the flight ?

I think they are going to try and fly a load out on Sunday when there is mean to be a break, as they were going to do today.Might be worth giving them a call and getting an update tomorrow. If you're happy to miss one day of your holiday then try and get on the flight ?
However normal service isn't resuming tomorrow.

Oli, we're leaving tomorrow morning from Eurotunnel, coming back next Saturday afternoon, going to Millau Bridge and staying in luxury hotels and chateaux. Evening meals included, breakfasts included. We have a couple of seats left, if you fancy coming i'll do you a very special deal...- Preferably something warm - Mrs zcacogp was looking forward to some sunshine (Farmhouse with big fire in Cornwall would be an option, but doesn't count on the 'Warm' front.)
