post code software
Discussion
We need a website to get a locations approximate grid reference. We will only be using the first three letters of the postcode....
In the past we have used AFD but that does not support this.
Postcode anywhere will support it but it does cost a load of cash.
Anyone got any bright ideas?

Yep, but unfortunatelt it is "pay the cash", due to licensing one the PAF data used by this it is quite pricy - I am an AFD dealer by the way. and am 99% sure AFD Names and Number will give you the ref from 3 letters - will check it out for you if you are interested

OS Grid references based on postcodes (first part) ?
I think www.streetmap.co.uk does this.
Or when you say website do you mean downloadable software?

Is it a website you need as www.streetmap.co.uk will give you the conversion details from postcodes to X:Y Coordinates, OS Grid Ref, OS Landranger Ref or Postcode.
See www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=524202&Y=216297&A=Y&Z=1 for the original map and www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?GridConvert?name=524202,216297&type=OSGrid for the resulting conversions
