Do a search for "young insurance". The same cars always get a mention, and classic insurance seems to be favoured by some.

Ford Ka seems to be a popular choice.

However, I'd recommend your parents' car as the best to learn in, closely followed by your instructor's car hehe

Talking to my parent neighbour he has his kids in Clio's as they are very good on insurance...

£2k should see a tidy model and a 1.4RT isnt a bad motor either

Other than that just make sure you can insure it in your own name...

If you buy a car make sure it is insured in your own name. If you don't need to buy a car, become a named driver on your parents' car(s).

I didn't own my first car until I was 23 as I didn't need one at Uni and then went to work in London, so a car was a luxury item for me. In 6th form and uni holidays I could negotiate with my dad for the use of his car - most of my mates did the same.

I learnt to drive in a Volvo 240 Estate - great fun and once I mastered reverse parking in that, I could park anything hehe

They'd have to ask their insurers... but almost certainly yes.

anything small and relatively modern will do the job. I far prefer my mums Seat Arosa 16v to an instructors Fabia diesel. Small engined Arosas and Lupos are reliable, cheap and easy to drive... though don't get a 1.4 sport as the insurance gets a bit steep after you pass wink
Finding something that is easy to see out of is great help when you are learning about any sort of low speed manoeuvring.
Clio is nice too as suggested above

My two boys both have Punto's............One started driving three years ago and one about to start. The latest one is a Grande Punto which I got last year as a cat D stolen and semi stripped. All together now so he has a cheap/fairly new/safe car and only group 2 insurance........When you go on to your parents insurance its usually about 2k extra or 1.5k if your female!! (depending area and insurer of course).......;)

Buy something thats got a manual gearbox, no power steering, no ABS/traction control and a small engine.

This combo will teach you alot more about car control than any new electrically assisted car will.

Peugeot 306.. 1.6-1.8 cheap insurance for the cc, and havng had a couple in the family very reliable. Also handle well and fun to drive. You could pick up a nice one for 2K, the merdian is the top spec with semi leather seats and well kitted. You could prob get one of these for under 2K

I'd tend to agree, but non PAS cars are getting rarer!
