Following my failed attempt to find a suitable villa in Rimini, thought about Sardinia. Which led on to Sicily.

Any thoughts on which isle is preferable for a family beachy holiday and specifically which coast/resort?

Doesn't have to be right on the beach but within a 10 minute drive.

Once I've narrowed down the region (even which island!) I can start a search for accommodation.

TIA smile

I had a week in Sicily this time last year. I stayed in an apartment on the outskirts of Palermo. Very nice place to be. Driving in Palermo can be a little hairy at times!

Found lots of nice bays 10-40 mins out of Palermo. Although I wouldn't normally advocate this, but the buses to the beaches were pretty good and saved the hassle of parking.

Only downside was having to Ryanair, it was the only company that few direct at the time!

Sardinia is the nicer of the two Islands, although more expensive due to being more sought after by Italians.

We've had two lovely holidays in Taormina which is NE corner of Sicily opposite the toe of Italy.

I went to Alghero last summer in the north of the island and I loved it.

Although it was a quiet place with not much in the way of tourism, it was a really relaxing place even though it was rammed with Italians on their summer holidays..

I would definately recommend visiting.

I came across a great new website (well newish!)
Like you holidaylettings, ownersdirect and holiday-rentals, this website only concentrate on Italy holiday lettings.

http://www.italylettings.com/property/search/resul...

That's you search results page for Sardinia.

Been to Sardinia twice in the last 4 yrs, Cala Gonone, lovely little quiet place on the east coast. I would thoroughly recommend Sardinia, beautiful beaches, mountainous interior with good driving and walking, although it's getting expensive.

Sardinia is amazing. I've never been to the north so can't help you there but it's definitely the better of your two choices imo.
