They're both equally slow and most of the petrols tend to smoke almost as much as the diesels! Having said that, a well rebuilt 2 1/4 petrol is quite a nice engine.

I wouldn't get too hung up over the engine (unless you can find a decent tdi or V8 conversion) and buy the best one that you can afford.

Not a lot in it. The diesel is louder and slower but offers slightly better mpg, although maybe not buy huge amounts.

TBH I'd not worry too much smile

I had a rebuilt 2.25 petrol in my series 3, and it was a lovely engine. Still slow, but quicker than the diesel, and quick enough to keep up with general traffic without feeling like you're holding anyone up. Replace the original belt fan with an electric one on the rad and it becomes amazingly quiet for what it is.

Fuel consumption is worse, but they're both thirsty and as you're hardly going to do mega miles in a series LR I'd rather have the better noise and performance of the petrol.

Regardless of engine, try to find one with overdrive if you're planning using it at ~50mph+ for any period of time. Mine would cruise at 60mph with overdrive very happily, and would do 70mph although sustaining it for a long time always felt rather unsympathetic!

Both are good engines. Both very simple and suit a series landy. Yes they are slow but a good one. Should cope easy with modern traffic even motorways. Especially with higher gearing the low gearing is what restricts speed. Both engines will last forever even with years of abuse. Petrols use more fuel a can be temperamental in deep water off road but give more power and are quieter than the diesel. Just find a good engine either fuel will do and its ver simple to do an engine swap in a series to. If you feel the need to change

Would go for the petrol in preference. Think that the Webber carb was the one to go for.
