Hi all I hope you can help with something that should be a straight forward problem.

I recently gave my niece an old laptop which is fine for all the surfing she does. However she was bought a game for her birthday on DVD. The laptop is fitted with a DVD/CD so should have been able to read it but cannot. Although I'm sure I've used it previously for DVDs. It can read CDs fine, so I'm assuming the device is mechanically fine.

I've just tried uninstalling the device and on reinstalling it is identified it as a CD-ROM, although it's device manager entry lists it as a DVD/CD-RW. Is there any way to force it to acknowledge its correct identity.

I'm guessing/hoping somewhere lurking in the setting / registry of windows XP there is something to sort this out and would appreciate any hints.
