I've heard stories of people buying and selling cars on eBay without any problems.

I personally would keep to PH classifieds, autotrader etc to reduce the risk of idiots bidding for a laugh.

It depends on the car though. Less than a thousand quid and id stick it on ebay and try to get more... especially if you want to get rid of it.

Anything decent i wouldn't bother as few true buyers would be happy buying off Ebay IMHO.

Good luck with the sale

In my opinion, where eBay excels is in the ability to paste in your own html, the ability to reach a huge market and sell unusual vehicles easily and its relatively cheap. Also, you're guaranteed a sale if you need to shift something quick (£1 no reserve).
If you are serious about selling the car then prove it. Web hosting and digi camera's are cheap. Give the bidder as much info as possible, save them ringing round X amount of private sellers who blankly answer your questions, lose patience and keeping saying 'its a pukka motor mate, just come and have a look'. Sellers should give people the confidence to bid. I'm all for eBay but compare the car ads for the uk eBay to the ones in the US (ebay.com). Now those guys are serious sellers. Most ad's have a minimum of 10 hi-res pics, uk sellers still have much to learn. More and more people are getting broadband, lets use the technology.
Personally, I prefer the searching and flexibility of eBay over autotrader anyday. Autotrader feels prehistoric in comparison.
Pistonheads classified is a happy go between but appeals to a specialised market.
I've sold a few cars on eBay but never bought one. I just can't bring myself to do it without having satisfactory answers to an exhaustive list of questions and most sellers unfortunately think I'm wasting their time! So to my initial point, if a seller is a serious one, he'll answer all the questions you have to the n'th degree. Give confidence.

zoom_jones... you've made a number of points very well...

I do agree with the American Ebay being a lot better. Lots of the guys on FChat use ebay and you can buy Murcielagos etc... heck even a wrecked Enzo! on ebay.

There was an article about e-bay in the Economist recently.

Did you know E-bay is the UK's biggest second-hand car sales company? I had put mine on e-bay and it generated a lot of interest. Look, what do you have to lose? A tenner for the ad?

Just make sure you put a decent reserve price.

Re."setting a good reserve"

I did a search on ebay for completed items on "Porsche 944", just to see what sort of price these were fetching.

What I found was that the higher end of the market were in fact not selling due to the reserve not being met, whilst the lower priced items did seem to have a good rate of completion. In fact some of the higher reserve cars, you can see have been listed more than once.

I would agree with Rico, looking at the sold items anything decent is probably better advertised elsewhere.

And I must admit, I would'nt buy from ebay, without viewing the car first.
