Looks like I will be needing an employee soon (all efforts to find a working partner having come to nought) and one of the first questions that arises is that of how to pay him (or her smile). I understand there are companies who will do all this for me and I am wondering whether avoiding the learning I would need to do, and the weekly admin is worth whatever the payroll company would charge me.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Does your accountant offer this service perhaps? Mine does and it's definitely worth the additional expense. It's hard enough running a company, managing staff etc without loading yourself up with other stuff like this.

For one employee it is probably easier to get your accountant to do the work for you as it saves you having to learn.

That said I have managed our payroll (using Sage) for 2 years without much hassle and I think it takes roughly 2 hours a month of my time and have had between 18 and 37 employees to look after.

Speaking as an accountant, I would also suggest that using your accountant is probably the best option.

The day to day admin of salary and tax/NI computation is that complicated. Things can get messy with holiday pay, sick pay, maternity pay/paternity pay etc
however.

The main complication is the additional work required just after the end of the tax year which many people pass on to their accountant anyway, even if they don't use their accountant to administer the payroll.

When we started up we used our accoutant to do our payroll, the only problem with it was the cost. We then switched to a dedicated payroll provider and have never looked back. I can highly recommend www.justpayroll.co.uk.
