Downloading Music

What's the best software combination for downloading, organising and playing music? Copyright free, obviously.

Is it a torrent client and itunes?

I happen to quite like iTunes, but I need it as I have an iPod. Others hate it and use Winamp etc - are you tied to certain software for devices?

Not tied to anything at the moment. I could be looking at a system for playing music, possibly an ipod & dock or squeeebox or similar in the future though.
