Foreigner speeding in the UK – what happens?

American driver, Car registered in Texas, USA, what happens when snapped by a camera? What happens when stopped by the local police. I’m certainly tempted to remove my front license plate while away from the US.

How about other countries? France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland?

More details required. Are you saying you have imported your American vehicle into the UK temporarily and will be driving it about?

Or will you be renting a UK vehicle?

Very different results...the US number plate would certainly confuse matters I expect...

I had intended to be driving my own vehicle, registered in the USA with a Texas license plate.

But for discussion's sake, let's take it both ways.

Germany:
automatic speed detection device (ie. fixed speed camera): photographed & no further prosecution
human operated speed detection device (laser, radar, etc.): officer tries to pull you
(however, there are still enough occasions to make legal progress on the Autobahn)

Switzerland:
any case: officer tries to pull you; if not, customs will look out for you

Anyway, I don't know if special conditions apply for overseas registered vehicles in terms of registration, etc.

US vehicle - automated systems can't even read the plate. Pass through a GATSO and it will have to be viewed by a human. Given their level of ingenuity/proactiveness I suspect that will be the end of it.

UK - vehicle. They will find out who you are from the rental company. Chances are they'll see you are a foreign national with no UK address and give up.

Now. If you are stopped by a real life copper for doing something awry....they will take the greatest of care to book you for it properly...and you will have to pay the fine or risk being arrested on your return to the UK in the future - same as it is the other way around for a Brit in the US.

Any BiBs care to elucidate further or correct me?

Don, it just occured to me though that you might be better with a Florida plate cos you don't need a front one there. (Or Maryland)
