So this should be dead easy.

For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8Y8CqQvKBU

But whenever I do near a stupid radiator the cap nut won't budge without a stupid amount of force which tends to bugger up the joint. So what's the trick do this? Heat the joint?

Hold the valve with a pair of grips when undoing the union nut.

Its easier with two people. With small rads you can do it without emptying the rad in situ

Close both rad valves, first person cracks the nut, there will be a little bit of pressure in the rad, once the pressure eases off, the inside of the rad will be in a near vacuum, so only a little bit of water will glug out.

After the first person has cracked the nut, pull the valve away from the rad and jam your thumb over the rad, next person does the same on their side. Then lift the rad off the brackets, turn it upside down and carry it out of the house and empty it into a drain. Be careful as the water could be stinking, I've taken rads off and the water has come out like used engine oil!

When storing your rad, don't store it vertically, you'd be suprised how easy they can warp! As the video mentions, cap off TRVs, they can make hell of a mess.

As Ferg said, you need to use a pair of grips on the valve, don't be tempted with just a spanner, you could bend the valve off the pipe!
