Has anyone bought the new 1 series 1.6 the detuned 2.0litre model, with the stop start tech.. Whats the true economy figures and what do they think.

I'm looking to replace my beater and keep for 5 years..

It's a toss up between a Yaris/Clio/Polo diesel or the 1 series petrol..diesel to expensive.. Got a clio 1.2 at the mo, 10 years old and doesn't miss a beat.. Looking to spend around 10k for a nearly new car that will last me 5+ yrs

Drove the one series on sunday..So easy to drive..Light clutch, smooth change and a good engine..Liked the stop start technology.. Still the amount of mileage I do at around 14k a year, am I better off with a diesel..

Thoughts??

Hi Kenny smile

I do like the 1er but honestly a 116i would not be on my radar if I had £10k to spend. I recently sold my 130i for £10k - that's a much better plan biggrin

(Try www.babybmw.net for some sensible advice wink)

i had one on loan whilst mine was in for a service, for a bog standard bmw 1 series it was really good, nice drive and good on fuel.

^^^^^^ Oppo for the wife. Her 116D Msport of a lemon has earned her a full refund and whilst she waits for her 120D replacement she has a 116i boggo on loan and it's just pants.

36mpg with 60 mph motorway use and very light traffic. My Z4 does that FFS.

Hmm if that's the case. Think I will scratch that one off my list..

One more point. It had done 22k in it's first year and got serviced then at 14 months.. Seems quite high. It was a late 08 plate priced at 12k with 26k on the clock.. The only reason I tried it was that I didn't think that year/type of car would be in my price bracket. It was in mint inside..just some scuff marks on the drives sill of door..

O'h well just keep looking I suppose..

I found the 116i to be pretty terrible all round. Have to caveat that by saying it was the 1.6 and not the 2.0 model that it changed to.

However, fuel consumption was pitiful for the slug of a car that it was.

Got a 118d next and it was worlds apart.

£10k will get you a 120d of some sort.

Quite normal, they run on a variable service and I'd expect 22k to be acheveable if driven fairly gently, drive it hard and the service interval reduces.

For perspective, even my hard-driven 123d didn't ask for a service until 19k.

£10k on a 116i, good Lord that sounds like an awful way to spend your hard-earned..

Spend half of that on a good e39 and keep the rest for servicing and extra fuel - your soul will thank you.

You can get some 118 and 120'd for that money, though won't have stop start.

Or just save your money, get a nice 330 e46 with a good history and stash some money in the bank for the marginal petrol costs and listen to that engine!!!! Oddly in terms of servicing etc you won't spend much more, the 330 wasn't blessed with a turbo to suck in bits of engine too, avoid the 116, you will be disappointed however you dress up the car.

I spank mine hard, so probably not really representative of what it *should* do. I never get less than 35mpg even hoofing it everywhere. My record was 52mpg over a 500-mile run. Probably averages out around 40 in the real world though, it's currently sat outside on 39mpg. I don't use the stop/start (it annoys me) and I do 50/50 town and dual carriageway/motorway.

The 2.0d twin-turbo is, however, a belter of an engine if you're definitely sold on going diesel (it's the same one Alpina use in the D3, albeit with a couple of minor tweaks).

Hi mate (Chris, isn't it..?), glad you're pleased with it! Can't see how it can begin to compare after an M6 though.. hehe

Out of interest, how much was your remap and did you get a handset with it (I see something to do with 'Superchips' on that van) so you can reset it to stock when needed?

I see you're also on the Dunlops by the looks of things? If you're sticking with RFTs, I can recommend the Bridgestone RE050A - very grippy and wearing well.

Your 1er should be pushing out about 245bhp and about 350lb/ft now - must feel quick, but does it seem to whip through the rev-range quite quickly? Looks awesome in black as well, it was my 'other' colour choice, I plumped for Space Grey in the end. smile

By the way, Rach* isn't my other half, just a fellow PHer who came along for the ride on Sunday!

Ooooops - sorry mate....just assumed (regarding passenger)!

Car was remapped, so permanent unless he comes back and puts the original map back into the diagnostics. £400.00. Same guy did my old 335d and 635d. 1st and 2nd gear not really worth bothering with - even in the dry, the traction control light on dash is flickering like mad.....biggrin Pulls like billy-oh now - well impressed. You can take her for a spin next time we meet up fella - see what you think. It has Potenza's on at the moment (only done 13,000 mikes - so I would imagine original fitment)

After all that deliberation. Today I ordered a 1.2 Clio extreme 3dr in Glazier white for the sum of 7495..Bloody bargain..

Renault Clio has it's 20th aniversary this wknd and dealers are selling many new models with good discounts. The one I ordered had the most off. Usually sells for over 11k. Basically the gimmick is that it was the same price as of 10 years ago.
