It is a friends VERY expensive Trek
http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/mountain_full...

He is an ex racer and he flies along the trails. On a flat bit of trail, it made a "donk" noise and the rear sus colapsed....

Don't Trek frames have a lifetime warranty?

If not at least there's something to be said for 'slumming it' on my 8000 hardtail!

Ouch! Did it damage the frame too or is it just the bell crank that's gone?

Trek supplied a new frame, then looked and the CF on the top of the forks, that had cracked so supplied new forks. We did a weekend at Afan and the owner noticed a small amount of slop in the suspension, turns out it was assembled incorrectly and a bush was mis aligned so now waiting for a 3rd new frame!

OUCH!
